Social Networking, internally? June 10, 2008

Social networking has taken over the world. If you’re not in it, then move aside.

Your employees are on MySpace, FaceBook, Twitter, and who knows what else. They are most likely on these sites at work, unless of course you’ve slammed the gavel and restricted access which all that has done is pissed off your employees. If you haven’t restricted access and know that your employees are on these sites, why not offer them an outlet?

No doubt that Gen X & Y are all over the Social Networking Web of sites. It’s like morning coffee, they need it. More and more, I hear of Boomers joining the revolution, and I am ecstatic about that, (mother-in-law on MySpace.com). If you could offer this to your employees, would you?

Here’s a way to offer a free perk at work.

I came across this site, Moli.com. I got excited at first, because I thought this was the answer to my prayers about having one site to manage ALL of my social networks in one place, but it’s not. So my search continues. You can create multiple profiles in one place. One personal, one for business, one hidden just for you. You can create a page for your business and invite clients to join. Moli says one of the uses for the site can be for social networking internally, with your employees. Think about it…companies can use Moli for creating an internal social network. Here’s a way internally to communicate with your employees about a new job posting that you can encourage them to tell their friends about to generate referrals. Marketing could use the site to announce company news. The possibilities are endless. HR could create a profile and network for external employees who want to get their foot in the door and connect with key people from the organization to build relationships…eeh hem, recruiters or maybe even the CEO.

I’m thinking Moli could serve as a great retention tool. Employees would be impressed that their employer has taken the plunge into social networking territory and offers them a place to express themselves, communicate and connect a in a safe way.

Equally important, it’s a non-formal way to express what life is like inside the organization to external people. For the sake of recruiting during a economic downturn and workforce shortage, this is a free way to market your recruitment opportunities and look cool while doing so.
